The Symbian Foundation has opened up its source code so all developers can now contribute. The move will allow developers to contribute to the development of the platform. This move was probably necessary if Symbian wants to compete with Google's Android OS.

Because it is open source, Symbian can now be installed on any compatible device for FREE. This should help expand Symbian's reach worldwide. Symbian is still the world leader but the competition is coming on strong.
