Nokia takes over development of Symbian

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - November 09, 2010

It looks like the Symbian Foundation will no longer develop the open source operating system that bares its name. The Symbian Foundation has decided to transition the role of the non-profit organization and will hand over the development duties to Nokia. The foundation will become a legal entity responsible for licensing software and other intellectual property, such as the Symbian trademark, and Nokia has will develop the OS. Nokia says it will allow them to provide updates more efficiently.

Symbian OS still dominates in the world mobile OS market, but many companies are looking to Android these days. Will Symbian be able to hold onto their lead with Nokia at the helm? I think their market share will slowly shrink as Apple, Microsoft, and Google are on the prowl.
